Gert is responsible for supporting and developing IT technologies specific to the Media Design programme. This includes developing technology for research projects such our Stereoscopic environment, physical computing and virtual collaboration environments such as Second Life and OpenSim. He is also responsible for overseeing quality and availability of network infrastructure, maintaining and operating Media Design's servers and services such as the Mediazone website, our blogs and the Media Design programme's presence in Second Life.

Gert has a BSc in Cognitive Artificial Intelligence at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, with a focus on autonomous robotics. In the year 2000, he was part of the Dutch team for the European Robocup robotic soccer contest as the lead developer for Utrecht University's robot, Dexter.
Gert's MSc in Systems and Networks engineering (University of Amsterdam) gives him thorough insight in the concepts behind complex IT systems relating to networks, servers, high-availability and security and a strong focus on Open Standards, Open Source and Open Specifications.
After years of designing and developing both frontend and backend software for smaller and larger web-based applications in the commercial world, Gert is using his experience as a web developer to promote and use agile development, scalability, usability and accessibility and web design best practices at the Media Design programme.
